Skinner began experimenting with a keyboard when he was five years old. As a teenager, he built a miniature recording studio in his bedroom. He began writing hip hop and garage music in his home in West Heath in Birmingham, with a crew of other rappers including best friend Chris Panton. He describes his background as “Barratt class: suburban estates, not poor but not much money about, really boring.” Skinner started making songs at the age of fifteen.
Fast forward 4 albums and some years later and it’s all coming to an end for Mike Skinner’s alter ego ‘The Streets’.
His final album under The Streets guise will be titled ‘Computers and Blues’. The album is set to be released on February 23rd 2010 and will be sad day for all the Streets heads out there! Us included.
Mike describes his last ‘Streets’ album
“My new album is FAST and DARK. Singing it loud and playing it with my manager in the dressing room WOOOOO.
This album is influenced by the future. It hasn’t happened yet im just excited at how MASSIVE its sounding. I’ve been up since 4am. It now sounds ravey. It is a ravey album that bludgeons you over the head with its stick of 1988 Romford, Blackpool and Philadelphia rock. It is an insane album”
So where does it go from here?
We sit back and wait with baited breath… will it be movies, “solo” albums, books or maybe a silent producers role? Who knows? One thing is for sure, he’ll be back. A genius can’t be silenced for long!
